Description

We are selling on behalf of our client his 1932 MG D Type, a car which has been in his family for nearly 30 years. The MG D Type Midget was produced only from 1931-32 and total production of these cars is estimated at just 250 examples of which we believe there were just 208 of the open four seater tourers, making this a rare car indeed. The body on the D Type is identical to that of the 6 cylinder F Type Magna which was in production at the same time as the D Type. The D Type engine was virtually a standard MG M Type engine, which is a 847cc four cylinder overhead camshaft unit. We believe the survival rates for the D Type are low making this quite a rare car. According to notes within the file this car is the second of the 86” wheel base cars built from no. 100 onwards.

Our car was purchased in April 1982 from an MG specialist as a rolling chassis and engine. The current owner then set about a gradual restoration of the car over many years which included a full engine rebuild and a combination of having new coachwork built by specialists along with the sourcing of original panels where possible. The restoration was undertaken over a long time frame but was never quite completed with the interior still to be fabricated and a new hood still to be fitted as the main outstanding jobs today.

The restoration of the car has been well documented to date with a large history file of invoices and correspondence relating to the work done and the provenance of the car. There is also an extensive photographic history of the work carried out so far. Plus there is a spares book and an instruction leaflet. There are numerous MOT certificates and although the car doesn’t need one there is a valid MOT for 12 months to the 5th July 2017 which is advisory free.

The car fires on the button and performs as you would expect of a car of this era. The bonnet line and design of this car make it a particularly attractive mode of pre war transportation and this car gets admiring glances wherever it goes. For someone prepared to finish the restoration this car provides a superb opportunity to preserve a very rare piece of motoring history that will only advance in value. The car is priced at a level to allow the next custodian to invest and complete the restoration which will only add value at the price we have set.
