Description

A real rarity and undoubtedly the most sought after of the 541 series of Jensen car. This particular 541S is chassis number 100/1058 with engine number 40/A/11094. With a reported 127 or so cars built there are very few of these cars that ever become available and this car has been with its current custodian for over 30 years. The car is fitted with the Rolls-Royce 'Hydramatic' 4 speed gearbox. The 541S was something of a milestone as the first British car to have seat belts fitted as standard equipment and the pioneering use of Dunlop disc brakes on all four wheels. Jensen used their own powerful version of the Austin DS5 4-litre straight-six engine (featuring triple H4 type SU carburettors) to create a very capable GT.

This car is being sold as in need of full restoration. It has had some remedial work carried out in recent years to the engine. Copredy Bridge stripped the engine and cleaned the head and block before re-assembly in 2018. The carbs were rebuilt by them in 2019, but since then the car has stood and will therefore require further recommissioning. The car does start, run and can be moved around.

The body has been stripped and painted in places, but the next custodian may choose to fully strip the car and carry out a full re-paint. The GRP body is in good condition. The interior seats are generally in good condition apart from the top of the front passenger seat which has suffered some damage. We have boxes of parts, trim etc and we believe the car to be complete. A full inspection of everything can be made by prospective buyers. The chassis appears to be in good order.

This is one restoration project that will be very worthwhile indeed. The 541S with its wider track and remodeled front end is undoubtedly the best looking of the 541 series and combined with better roadholding and a strong power unit, it makes for a superb grand tourer. We have seen good examples sell for in excess of £60k and a concours car closer to £100k. That should leave the next custodian with plenty of scope to bring this car back to life and add value given our asking price of £23,500. Offers are invited.
