Description
This is a unique opportunity to buy an E-Type that is a genuine one owner car and has only now come to market following the death of the owner. The car itself is in need of restoration having been in storage since approximately 2002. The car comes with a full history file which includes the original invoice from Highland Garage in Braintree, Essex along with its early service history invoices and many other invoices up until the time it was taken off the road in 2002. It also has a fully completed service book from the first service on the 11th August 1969 at 1,103 miles to the last in 2000 at 38,007 miles! It comes with all of the manuals and paperwork issued at the time of sale. The car had a new speedo fitted in early 1980 and the last prior speedo reading in June 1979 was 21611 miles. The car currently shows 38,845 miles. Given that it was sparsely used in its early years, we suspect the total mileage sits at a little over 61,000 miles.
The original invoice shows the car to be in its original colour scheme of cream with red leather. A tow bar is also specified as being fitted from new along with seat belts. Unsurprisingly given the relatively low mileage the interior condition remains very good indeed. The driver's seat is showing general wear especially to the seat squab. The front passenger seat also has some wear with one small seam split as you can see in the photographs. We doubt the rear seats have even been used! Also impressive is the dashboard condition and the headlining which is in near mint condition.
Externally the car will need restoration work. The body has surface corrosion and in certain places this has become more embedded especially at the front of the offside rear wing and both sides of the front valance. The underside also has surface corrosion. The floor pans are generally sound although again there are some areas where the corrosion is more significant. Overall though the car is generally sound and will make a rewarding restoration, especially for someone with the appropriate skill set.
Mechanically we have managed to get the car running and it is running cleanly and showing good oil pressure.
It is becoming increasingly rare to find examples of these cars which have such great provenance and undoubtedly soon it will be almost impossible to find one which has had only one custodian from new. This is a full restoration, but you have a relatively sound base to work from and because it is unmolested you are starting with a car that has nice panel fits especially in important areas such as the doors. We have priced the car well below the price of a restored example and for someone seeking a car which they can add value to, especially one which will command a premium when it is done because of the provenance, this is the perfect opportunity to get into E-Type ownership.
